Souls Campaign Rules
System Rules
The world of the Souls Campaign has gone through several incarnations, and in this newest incarnation I have changed systems, sorta.
Souls will be run in the D20 Call of Cthulhu system. The reason for this is that the Call of Cthulhu system lends itself nicely to a horror/suspense setting. Those who have been in the previous incarnations before in D20 Modern will find that there are some significant changes.
Sanity
This is the new feature that will be part of your character. It is exactly what it sounds like, a number showing you how close you are to losing your mind. The reason I am adding this is because I wanted the players to see how close they are to not being able to handle the horrors and reality bending events happening around them.
Magic
I am severly pulling back the amount of magic, but not eliminating it. Magic will be rare but not unattainable. However to offset the power of magic in a modern world, Magic now has sanity costs. Afterall, you are defying the natural world as you know it, your mind won't come away unharmed. This also has the beneift that magic will stay special and keep the supernatural from becoming normal.
Psionics
Like magic , psionics is getting severly redacted. No psionic classes, no powers etc. Instead, there are some basic powers that are RP heavy, and again cost sanity in the Call of Cthulhu system that fit better with the horror/suspense investigative feel of the campaign.
Classes
The Call of Cthulhu system has no classes. You choose basically defensive or offensive, and you even get to choose your own skill set. This eliminates powers and talents from modern and makes yoru character more normal. This is the only thing I am considering changing, based on player feedback. Afterall, you have a soul, you should be capable of more than the average person, but you still face off against greater things than you have ever faced off before. Regardless, the FX classes, magic and psychic classes are off the table.
Skills
The skills in the Call of Cthulhu system are based off your profession. You can even make up your profession and build your own skill set if it makes sense. These obviously will go away to some degree if players want to use the core D20 Modern classes.
Feats
This will only change if we use the Call of Cthulhu system. I will allow you to have 2 feats at lvl 1, and an additional feat every odd level instead of every 3rd level. This will let you have more feats and be more special since you no longer have class features.
Money
I dislike the wealth system, and in the same breath, I dislike using cash in a modern world. We'll just play fast and loose with money using the wealth system and the team members will probably always have the advantage when shopping. Just don't ask for anything extraordinary and give me a good reason you can buy it/need it.
Combat
No Change. Combat will still be fast and loose and be more cinematic than tied down to the mechanic.
That's all the changes for now.
